About AstridI was there when the wall came down.
I grew up in Germany. I was eight when it happened. It feels weird writing about it now because at the time, it didn’t mean that much to me. But when I look back on it, I automatically think about new beginnings. I think about how I got here…
Science was my thing. I like facts. I like solving problems. My mother is a surgeon, and Dad was a teacher before he retired.
I never really spoke about it, but I always assumed I would follow in Mum's footsteps. There is something about the healing profession that calls to me. I went through high school bracing myself for the medical world.

But my heart belongs to nature. I love the smell of it. The way it sounds feels like poetry to me. Somehow it’s peaceful even when it’s unsettled. I’m at home in nature, and so animals became my thing. Australia would be the prize at the end of my studies.
I came here with a Masters degree after living in a rain forest in Central Vietnam for six months. I discovered (and therefore got to name) two new species of geckos. In a lot of ways, that set me up in my field of expertise. I was able to choose my destination after that.
I always knew Australia was where I belonged. I moved here ten years ago. My sole focus was my career. I wasn’t really interested in anything else. I’m a conservationist, and I had a single-minded drive to help protect and preserve the beauty of the environment.
But then things started to shift ever so slightly. I started to look up from what I was doing. I noticed some other things. My gaze became softer in a lot of ways. My purpose did not change but my outlook did. And then Ethereal Touch came to be. That’s how I got to where I find myself now. It was the weirdest thing that made it happen…
I met this guy.
